Camping at Lake Weissensee:

dreamlike nature experiences and plenty of swimming fun

Hiking and mountain biking around Lake Weissensee

If you feel like going on an extended hike or hopping on a mountain bike while camping at Lake Weissensee—go for it! The marked network of hiking trails stretches over 200 kilometers and offers the perfect route for every preference. Prefer a flat path around the lake or heading up to rugged peaks? Through dense green forests or across gentle alpine meadows? The choice is yours!

A special highlight are the nine beautifully designed themed hiking trails. Whether it’s the romantic Fairy Tale Lakeside Trail or a search for the mysterious “forest glass,” there’s plenty to discover along the way. Between May and October, rustic, serviced alpine huts invite you to take a break—such as the Waisacher Alm at 1,245 meters, the Techendorfer Alm at 1,573 meters, or the Fischer Alm at 1,081 meters.

If you’d rather skip the climb, simply take the Weissensee mountain railway up to 1,324 meters. The mountain station is the perfect starting point for unforgettable walks or hikes: stroll to the spectacular viewpoint “Drachsel Bildstöckl,” admire the EU monument “Signpost for Tomorrow,” or stop by the cozy Kohlröslhütte.

Since summer 2018, three family-friendly MTB trails—each around three kilometers long—have offered a fun sporting challenge, leading from the mountain down to the lake. More experienced mountain bikers can look forward to a total of eleven routes of varying difficulty. Root trails, steep curves, wooden bridges, and tight switchbacks—everything an ambitious biker could wish for is here! And by the way: the Weissensee mountain railway even features a special MTB transport chair.

From camping at Lake Weissensee straight onto the boat

Nature conservation and boating can go hand in hand: Lake Weissensee is home to Europe’s first hybrid passenger ship. A trip on the Alpenperle is not only relaxing but also an environmentally friendly experience. As the boat glides gently across the lake, you can admire the impressive mountain scenery of the Gailtal Alps.

If you’d like to combine a boat trip with a hike, no problem—you can hop on and off at any of the eight docking stations along the route. If you’d prefer to take the helm yourself, you can rent one of the traditional wooden boats, handcrafted right here at the lake. Or why not try a sailing or catamaran course? Especially in the western part of the lake, wind conditions are often ideal for sailing. Also available: inflatable canoe tours or introductory kayaking courses.

And there’s even more to look forward to at Lake Weissensee

Camping at Lake Weissensee is particularly popular among anglers, as the lake is home to 22 species of fish—from carp and pike to perch. The fishing season runs from May 1 to October 31, and fishing permits are valid for the entire lake.

Staying active on holiday is also easy here: twelve fantastic running routes circle the lake, all color-coded and carefully measured—even stretching bars at different heights are provided! You can also join running groups for beginners and advanced participants. Nordic walkers will enjoy nine dedicated trails along the lakeshore.

And if you prefer a more relaxed pace, a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride around Lake Weissensee is the perfect way to unwind.
