Carinthia’s fantastic world of mountains and lakes is simply perfect for a relaxing camping holiday—there’s no doubt about it. But you can enhance the experience even further: just leave your car behind for excursions and activities and explore the region by bike instead!
Around Carinthia’s campsites, an extensive and wonderfully scenic network of cycling paths invites you to enjoy unforgettable tours. And as the wind rushes through your hair and past your face, you can soak up the warm sunshine on your skin and the gentle sounds of nature in your ears. There’s no better way to immerse yourself in our beautiful landscapes!
Cycling at Lake Pressegger See and Lake Weissensee
Lake Weissensee is also a rewarding destination for cyclists. Nestled picturesquely in the heart of the Gailtal Alps at an elevation of 930 meters, it is considered the highest alpine bathing lake. Its elongated shape resembles a fjord in places and features a truly enchanting lakeside landscape.
With a mountain bike, you’ll find many beautiful routes here, including the 35-kilometer circuit around Lake Weissensee or the Naggler Alm loop with its spectacular viewpoints. If you’re traveling on a touring bike, you can only ride along the western lakeshore—but even here, you’ll repeatedly enjoy fantastic views of the lake’s shimmering blue waters.
On the move in the Lesachtal and Gitschtal
In the cycling paradise of Lesachtal, no fewer than 28 bike tours await you—suitable for leisure cyclists, mountain bikers, and road cyclists alike. One example is the route to the popular excursion village of Obergail, with its many cozy places to stop for refreshments. The route impresses with a unique panoramic view. From Obergail, you can even look directly down into the valley—something that leaves even experienced globetrotters in awe!
Also highly recommended is the Nassfeld – Lesachtal – Weissensee route. This scenic tour offers you an unforgettable panorama of the Carnic Alps and the Lienz Dolomites.
The Gitschtal is at least just as worth exploring, with its largely unspoiled natural landscape. Families especially love the Gitschtal Cycle Path (R3b), which, thanks to its easy and gentle route, is also ideal for beginners. Along the way, several beautiful rest areas and playgrounds invite you to take a break.
Extra tip: why not take a detour to the Weißenbachklamm gorge? This unique natural paradise is home to many rare plants and animals waiting to be discovered!
Another beautiful cycling loop starts and ends in Weißbriach. This peaceful route is suitable for all fitness levels and shows just how relaxing and rejuvenating the Gitschtal can be.
